In my freezer…
Sunday, January 11th, 2009Sit two rabbits. You see this year I decided I wanted to work on exotic meats. (amoung a few other things.) Lets clarify exotic. “Exotic according to my family” and while for some members that means “food other then ramen” we’re going with the general consensus.
This is hard for me, because I know not everyone will want to try everything, and with dinner I try to be a people pleaser. But for one dinner out of the month, I figure we’ll do ok.
So back to the rabbits. For January I decided on rabbit, thinking that the easiest thing to do will be stew. But I’m a little hesitant. With some of the other meats I’ll get they’ll be in a pretty familiar form. A goose is a smaller turkey, a duck is a longer chicken and so on. Elk? We’re talking ground, maybe steaks. Deer? Same as elk. And so on.
But rabbits? Well the only thing their boney structure reminds me of is… my cat. Despite my warnings I have yet to skin her and cook her so this is all new ground to me. And I have to confess I don’t like working with bony things so much. The one kitchen task I fail at because of the squick* factor is deboning chickens. Something about the crack of bones in the precooked stage just sets my teeth on edge and long for my days as a vegetarian.
So I face these rabbits, revealing in the challenging of trying to prepare something so completely foreign to me. Hopefully they turn out ok.. I don’t want to have to order pizza.
*not true, I think I also don’t have the gusto to cook blood sausage. Luckily my family has no interest in blood sausage.
