Holiday foods

Monday, December 25th, 2006

I wandered over to Central Market yesterday  in the middle of the pre holiday hub bub rush. (going to crowded places during the holidays has been very much a theme this year) As I wandered  around I was interested to see the things that they were out of as well as the things that were on sale because they were holiday associated.
Clams and mussels were sold out.
All the Crabs were sold out.
Coffee was on sale.
Big cuts of meat were on sale
The bakery was full  of special holiday baked goods.
-Pannetone
-Stollen
-Buche d Noel.

This year I’ve done more holiday related baking then I have in years. Despite my kitchen aids demise I spent a lot of time making cookies. I tackled
-Chocolate peppermint meringues
-Honey lace cookies
-Kolachkies with three fillings
-Earl grey tea cookies
-Sugar cookie cutouts
-Mexican wedding cookies
-Spritz cookies
-Chocolate spritz cookies

I still wanted to tackle gingerbread and shortbread, but that didnt happen. Shortbread will likely happen before new years though.

Since I am having a solitary holiday, I acquired a few small items for a Christmas lunch today. Of course it turns out my family may be coming home tonight, so I’m prepping for that by making cranberry sauce and thawing a ham. I know they arent expecting a second Christmas dinner, but well, if they are home tonight I need to feed them and why not make it festive.

New Years eve will be more celebratory with a dinner of fondue and gift unwrapping  here at chez Seattlejo.

Gift Idea Number Two

Saturday, December 2nd, 2006

Remember that Granola we made? Well we’re giving it away now. We’ve foodsavered it up and made labels.
We’re giving away 2 cup bags of it.

As with all homemade gifts this one is from the heart. To be a truely great gift remember to make your pacakging pretty and keep your giftee in mind. For example the above granola mix has oats, oatbran, sunflower seeds, maple syrup, pumpkin seeds, sugar and a little bit of a vanilla. If my friends  allergic to maple  this would not be a good choice. It’s also important to list the ingrediants on the product label to keep everyone safe.

Want to step up the present?

Presenting a bag or two of granola in a bowl with a spoon is one more step up.
A bowl can be purchased cheaply at target or even at the thrift store again.
